Charles Kohlman was best known as the bass trombonist of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra in Cincinnati, Ohio, during the early 20th century. He was a founding member of that orchestra in 1885. Kohlman wrote these etudes for the bass trombone in 1915. These tonal etudes are also quite useful for tubists—especially those performing on the Eb or F tubas.
