    This is the bible!

Posted by Karl Winkler on 17th Dec 2020

After much research on the subject of literature for bowing technique, I learned of the existence of this English translation of the famous book by Capet. Although some similar material can be found in Galamian's book on violin technique, and Fisher's books, this volume by Capet is the true foundation of the "French School" of bowing. It is dense material and takes considerable time to digest and incorporate into one's practice routines, but even with the short time I've had with it, I can see the benefits of continuing with it in earnest. Encore Music Publishing offers excellent customer service, by the way - thank you!

Pleased with the general translation and quality, however disappointed to find the scales and arpeggios (351 & 383 of part to be filled with errors. Maybe a misaligned printing type. Some pitches are incorrectly placed, or hard to discern.

    Important, comprehensive, old style language.

This is an important book for string players (not just violinists, as the publisher suggests). It is comprehensive and very informative. The style of Capet's writing is a bit cumbersome at times, but this remains a very important book in my library.
