This beautiful and poignant aria, originally composed by Tchaikovsky, has been masterfully arranged for tuba and piano by Wesley Jacobs. This arrangement showcases the full potential of the tuba as a solo instrument, and even young tubists can perform it with great impact.

    Lyric solo

Posted by Jim Parr on 9th May 2015

I'm hoping to play this solo in church. Watching Iolanta at The Met in HD reminded me I had King Rene's Aria, and the drama of the opera gave me a new appreciation for it.

    Solid Break Solo

Because the solo doesn't go very high, I've used it a lot of a solo in between major recital pieces as a cool-down. Considering how low it goes, it works well for that purpose. In terms of technicality, though, look somewhere else. It's incredibly lyrical and thus doesn't have many angular intervals or large swings in octaves without leading the player there first.
